Minneapolis public schools have seen some significant changes over the last year. The school district has been reshaped in hopes to allow for a more equal opportunity for all students.
Today we’re talking about these new CDD Minneapolis guidelines, as well as which school districts are currently ranked the best in the area. Let’s dive in and take a look.
Comprehensive District Design
The CDD or comprehensive district design is the new plan for the Minneapolis school district. In April of 2020, the board of education voted in favor of the Minneapolis CDD to restructure the school system. There will be no changes to the education system until the fall of 2021. When that date comes, students and parents can expect the district to have a plan for how they will go about transitioning different students to different schools.
This was done in an effort to ensure MPLS schools and families will receive an equal opportunity when it comes to the education system. This starts with promoting academic achievement, local communities taking equity and responsibility for their schools, and building a sustainable education program. Here are the different areas that will be affected by this change:
- District Structure – an effort to create high-quality community schools throughout the city.
- Student Placement – better plans for enrollment and allocation of funds for schools.
- Professional Development – training to support culturally sustaining teaching and learning.
- Curriculum and Instruction – focus placed on literacy and equitable access to more rigorous programming.
- Financial Operations and Budgeting – $200M+ of investment in capital improvement to meet the academic programming needs.
- Staffing – increased investment in teachers of diverse backgrounds.
- Transportation – placing children in schools that are closer to their home and offering better bussing schedules.
- School Climate – community schools that better reflect their students and community.
All of the changes that the district is trying to make seem great and worthy of their work. But what does it mean for you and your family?
What Schools are Changing
One of the biggest changes you’ll notice when you look at anything on the CDD is the location of the magnet schools. A magnet school offers a more specialized approach to education as well as a more advanced curriculum in many cases. These schools might require a student to be a higher level of learner.
Here’s a chart of the magnet school’s current locations vs. what they are proposed to change to.

Outside of magnet schools, the boundaries for the school zones have all been affected and changed in one way or another. Here’s an example showing what the current boundaries look like and what the boundaries will look like in fall 2021 when it comes to High School attendance.

As you can see, there will be quite a few changes to the district. Not every student, but many will need to change schools in order to stay within the guidelines of the boundaries. Changing schools is one of the bigger concerns of those that are affected by the CDD. Unfortunately, a lot of friends will be separated, and students might be forced out of their comfort zone in many cases. But, the Minneapolis public school district is definitely doing their best to create a system that, in time, will serve all students in the best ways possible.
Best Schools after the CDD
Most are unsure of what schools will be best for students after the district design. Because both staff and students will be moving between different schools, it’s hard to tell which schools will excel (Though, it is the hope that all schools will excel after these guidelines are established) . It should also be noted that many schools will need to higher new staff members as teachers often see times like these as good opportunities to make career moves.
As we move toward the changes that the comprehensive district design will bring, it’s important that parents stay involved in their community. Many parents have shared their opinions and voices to the Minneapolis public school district and its board members. Continuing to be involved in the process will help to ensure that the teachers and all of the students are taken care of in the best way possible.
